Loxosporopsis corallifera Brodo, Henssen & Imshaug

A crustose lichen containing a trebouxioid alga; thallus white, often extensive, producing abundant cylindrical isidia that are much longer than wide; apothecia uncommon, the algal rim like the thallus in colour and texture, often thin and receding; rim formed of blocky or rounded cells; disc light to dark brown; paraphyses densely branched and anastomosed, embedded in gel; asci cylindrical or narrowly clavate, with a moderately thickened tholus that reacts IKI+ blue, without an axial mass, ocular chamber distinct; spores fusiform, colourless, with 1-5 transverse septae, 35-50 (‑60) × 5.5-7.5  µ.

Reactions: UV+ blue-white, and the apothecial disc C+ pink.

Contents: Divaricatic acid in the thallus, and gyrophoric acid in the apothecial disc.

Habitat: On conifer bark in rainforests. Lower elevations.

Similar Species: Not likely to be confused with any other species.

Specimens: Goward 96-912.

Local Status: Rare.
